Malaria Parasite (Smear or Rapid Test)

Also known as: MP test, Malaria parasite test, Malaria ICT, malaria ka test, MP test kya hai

Looks for malaria parasites in the blood, either under the microscope (blood smear, 'MP test') or with a rapid antigen test (RDT/ICT). Microscopy can also identify the type, such as P. vivax or P. falciparum.

Why it's ordered

Fever, especially with chills, sweating and headache, in or after travel to an area where malaria occurs. In Pakistan, malaria is common in many areas, especially after the monsoon.

Preparation

No preparation needed. The test is best done while you have fever, but it can be done at any time.

Typical adult values

NormalNo malaria parasites seen / RDT negative

Ranges vary between labs and methods. Always use the range printed on your report.

If it's positive / reactive

A positive test confirms malaria and needs treatment by a doctor the same day. Falciparum malaria can become severe quickly. Seek urgent care for confusion, drowsiness, repeated vomiting, dark urine, yellow eyes or difficulty breathing.

Good to know

One negative test does not fully rule out malaria. If fever continues, the smear is usually repeated every 12–24 hours, up to three times. WHO recommends confirming malaria with a test before treatment rather than treating every fever as malaria.

Common questions

Can a malaria test be negative even if I have malaria?

Yes. One negative test does not fully rule out malaria. If fever continues, the smear is usually repeated every 12–24 hours, up to three times.

What is the difference between MP smear and malaria ICT?

The smear looks for parasites under the microscope and can identify the type; the rapid test (RDT/ICT) detects parasite antigens and gives a quick result.

What should I do if my malaria test is positive?

A positive test needs treatment by a doctor the same day. Seek urgent care for confusion, drowsiness, repeated vomiting, dark urine, yellow eyes or difficulty breathing.

When is the best time to test for malaria?

The test is best done while you have fever, but it can be done at any time.
