HIV 1/2 Test

Also known as: HIV 1/2 test, AIDS test, HIV Ag/Ab, HIV test, AIDS ka test

Checks for HIV infection. Most labs use a combined test that detects HIV antibodies and the p24 antigen (a fourth-generation test), which finds infection earlier than older tests.

Why it's ordered

Screening adults at least once, in every pregnancy, before surgery or treatments, after a possible exposure, and with symptoms such as long fever, weight loss or repeated infections.

Preparation

No preparation needed. Your result is confidential.

Typical adult values

NormalNon-reactive (negative)

Ranges vary between labs and methods. Always use the range printed on your report.

If it's positive / reactive

A reactive screening test is not a final diagnosis: it must be confirmed with further tests. If HIV is confirmed, effective treatment lets people live long, healthy lives and prevents passing the virus on. In Pakistan, HIV treatment is provided free at government HIV treatment centres.

Good to know

A test done too soon after exposure can be negative (the 'window period', up to about 6 weeks for fourth-generation tests), so it may need repeating. After a possible exposure, such as a needle-stick injury, medicine to prevent infection (PEP) works best if started within hours and no later than 72 hours: go to a hospital immediately.
