eGFR Calculator (CKD-EPI 2021)

eGFR estimates how well your kidneys filter blood, in mL/min/1.73m². This calculator uses the CKD-EPI 2021 creatinine equation, which is recommended for adults and does not use race.

Good to know

For adults 18 and over only. Chronic kidney disease is diagnosed only if eGFR stays below 60 for more than 3 months, or there are other signs of kidney damage such as protein in the urine; one result is not enough. eGFR is not reliable during sudden kidney injury, in pregnancy, or with very high or very low muscle mass (for example amputation or bodybuilders).

Formula

eGFR = 142 × min(Scr/κ, 1)^α × max(Scr/κ, 1)^−1.200 × 0.9938^age × 1.012 [if female]

Scr = serum creatinine in mg/dL; κ = 0.7 (female) or 0.9 (male); α = −0.241 (female) or −0.302 (male).

Common questions

What is a normal eGFR?

90 or above is normal (G1). 60–89 is mildly decreased (G2) and is common with ageing.

Does one low eGFR mean kidney disease?

No. Chronic kidney disease is diagnosed only if eGFR stays below 60 for more than 3 months, or there are other signs of kidney damage.

Which formula does this calculator use?

The CKD-EPI 2021 creatinine equation, which is recommended for adults and does not use race.
