Uric Acid

Also known as: Serum urate, Gout test, uric acid test, uric acid zyada hona, jodon ka dard test

Measures uric acid, a waste product made when the body breaks down purines (found in body cells and in foods such as red meat, organ meat and some seafood). It is removed mainly by the kidneys.

Why it's ordered

Checking for gout, monitoring gout treatment, and in some kidney stone, kidney disease and cancer-treatment cases.

Preparation

Fasting is usually not required, but some labs prefer it. Avoid heavy meals and alcohol the day before.

Typical adult values

Menabout 3.4–7.0 mg/dL
Womenabout 2.4–6.0 mg/dL
Target in gout treatmentbelow 6 mg/dL

Ranges vary between labs and methods. Always use the range printed on your report.

If it's high

High uric acid can lead to gout and kidney stones. Many people with mildly high uric acid never get gout and do not need medicine; your doctor decides based on symptoms.

If it's low

Low uric acid is uncommon and usually not important.

Good to know

During a gout attack, uric acid can be normal, so a normal result does not rule out gout. Common causes of high levels include kidney disease, some water tablets (diuretics), obesity, alcohol and sugary drinks.

Common questions

What is a normal uric acid level?

Typically about 3.4–7.0 mg/dL in men and about 2.4–6.0 mg/dL in women. Always use the range printed on your report.

Does high uric acid always need medicine?

No. Many people with mildly high uric acid never get gout and do not need medicine; your doctor decides based on symptoms.

Can uric acid be normal during a gout attack?

Yes. During a gout attack, uric acid can be normal, so a normal result does not rule out gout.

What uric acid level should I aim for with gout?

In gout treatment, the usual target is below 6 mg/dL.
