Dengue NS1 Antigen
Also known as: Dengue test, NS1 test, dengue ka test, dengue bukhar ka test
NS1 is a protein released by the dengue virus. It can be detected in blood during the first days of fever.
Why it's ordered
Diagnosing dengue early, especially during the post-monsoon season (roughly August to November in Pakistan).
Preparation
No preparation needed. Timing matters more than anything else.
Typical adult values
| Normal | Negative |
|---|---|
| Best time to test | Days 1–5 of fever |
Ranges vary between labs and methods. Always use the range printed on your report.
If it's positive / reactive
A positive NS1 means dengue infection. Most people recover with rest and fluids, but platelets and haematocrit (on CBC) need to be monitored, especially between days 3 and 7.
Good to know
A negative NS1 after day 5 does not rule out dengue — dengue IgM is more useful then. Avoid aspirin and ibuprofen if dengue is suspected; paracetamol is preferred. Warning signs such as severe stomach pain, persistent vomiting or bleeding need emergency care.
