CBC (Complete Blood Count)
Also known as: Blood CP, Complete blood picture, khoon ka test, CBC test kya hai
Counts and measures your red blood cells (which carry oxygen), white blood cells (which fight infection) and platelets (which help blood clot).
Why it's ordered
Checking for anaemia, infection, inflammation, bleeding problems, and monitoring illnesses such as dengue.
Preparation
No fasting needed.
Typical adult values
| Haemoglobin (men) | 13.0–17.0 g/dL |
|---|---|
| Haemoglobin (women) | 12.0–15.0 g/dL |
| White cells (WBC) | 4.0–11.0 ×10³/µL |
| Platelets | 150–400 ×10³/µL |
| MCV (red cell size) | 80–100 fL |
Ranges vary between labs and methods. Always use the range printed on your report.
If it's high
High WBC is often seen with bacterial infection or inflammation. High platelets can follow infection, iron deficiency or surgery.
If it's low
Low haemoglobin means anaemia. Low haemoglobin with small cells (low MCV) suggests iron deficiency or thalassaemia trait. Low platelets are a key sign to monitor in dengue.
Good to know
Thalassaemia trait is common in Pakistan and can look like iron deficiency on a CBC. If iron tests are normal but cells are small, ask your doctor about Hb electrophoresis.
Common questions
Is haemoglobin 11 low for a woman?
Yes. The typical adult range for women is 12.0–15.0 g/dL, and low haemoglobin means anaemia. Always use the range printed on your report.
Do I need to fast for a CBC?
No fasting needed.
What does a high WBC count mean?
High WBC is often seen with bacterial infection or inflammation. The typical range is 4.0–11.0 ×10³/µL. Always use the range printed on your report.
Can thalassaemia trait look like iron deficiency on a CBC?
Yes. Thalassaemia trait is common in Pakistan and can look like iron deficiency on a CBC. If iron tests are normal but cells are small, ask your doctor about Hb electrophoresis.
