Blood Culture (for typhoid)
Also known as: Blood C/S, Blood culture and sensitivity, blood culture test, typhoid ka sahi test
Blood is placed in special bottles to grow any bacteria or fungi present. If something grows, the lab identifies it and tests which antibiotics work against it.
Why it's ordered
Fever with suspected serious infection (sepsis), suspected typhoid, and infections of the heart valves. It is the most reliable test for typhoid in the first week of fever.
Preparation
Ideally collected before starting antibiotics. Usually two sets are taken from different sites, with careful skin cleaning to avoid contamination.
Typical adult values
| Normal | No growth after 5 days of incubation |
|---|
Ranges vary between labs and methods. Always use the range printed on your report.
If it's positive / reactive
A positive culture names the germ and its antibiotic sensitivity, so treatment can be chosen correctly. Many positive cultures are reported within 1–3 days. Growth of skin bacteria in only one bottle may be contamination, which the doctor will judge.
Good to know
In Pakistan, extensively drug-resistant (XDR) typhoid has spread since 2016, so knowing which antibiotics still work is essential. Blood culture is far more reliable than the Widal or Typhidot tests, which detect antibodies and often give misleading results.
Common questions
Which is the best test for typhoid?
Blood culture, especially in the first week of fever. It is far more reliable than the Widal or Typhidot tests.
How long does a blood culture take?
Many positive cultures are reported within 1–3 days. If nothing grows during incubation, it is reported as negative.
Should a blood culture be taken before antibiotics?
Yes, ideally before starting antibiotics.
Why is antibiotic sensitivity important for typhoid in Pakistan?
Extensively drug-resistant (XDR) typhoid has spread since 2016, so knowing which antibiotics still work is essential.
