Anti-HCV (Hepatitis C)
Also known as: Hepatitis C test, Hep C test, HCV test, hepatitis C ka test, kala yarqan test
Antibodies your body makes against the hepatitis C virus. They show that you have been exposed at some point — not necessarily that the infection is active.
Why it's ordered
Screening every adult at least once, especially important in Pakistan where hepatitis C is common.
Preparation
No preparation needed.
Typical adult values
| Normal | Non-reactive (negative) |
|---|
Ranges vary between labs and methods. Always use the range printed on your report.
If it's positive / reactive
A reactive result needs an HCV RNA (PCR) test. A positive PCR means active infection, which modern tablets cure in most people within 8–12 weeks. A negative PCR usually means a past infection that has cleared.
Good to know
Antibodies usually stay positive for life, even after cure. That is why anti-HCV is not used to check whether treatment worked — PCR is.
Common questions
What does a reactive anti-HCV mean?
It shows you have been exposed at some point, not necessarily that the infection is active. A reactive result needs an HCV RNA (PCR) test.
What if anti-HCV is reactive but PCR is negative?
A negative PCR usually means a past infection that has cleared.
Can hepatitis C be cured?
Yes. Modern tablets cure hepatitis C in most people within 8–12 weeks. A positive PCR shows the infection is active and needs treatment by a doctor.
Why is anti-HCV still positive after treatment?
Antibodies usually stay positive for life, even after cure. That is why PCR, not anti-HCV, is used to check whether treatment worked.
